Whether you are dieting or just eating for comfort, we have a strange love affair with carbohydrates. Dieters can be on the low carb or no carb kick, meaning they eat minimal carbohydrates or none at all. While those eating carbohydrates for comfort tend to choose things like pizza, macaroni, and cheese, doughnuts, ice cream, or many more. Low carb or no carb dieters are more likely to choose the carbohydrates that have the most nutritional value, while those choosing carbohydrates for comfort are likely to ignore the nutritional value or lack thereof, of their choices. Some may not even be aware their comforting foods are carb heavy.
1. What is a Simple Carbohydrate?
Simple carbohydrates are digested and absorbed more efficiently than complex carbohydrates. They contain just one or two sugars, like fructose (from fruits,) galactose (from milk products,) sucrose (from table sugar,) lactose (from dairy products,) and maltose (from beer and some vegetables.) Candy, soda, syrups, cookies, pastries, and pasta are considered simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates come from white flour or refined sugar. These types of foods have little to no nutritional value and tend to cause spikes in blood sugar levels. In other words, these foods are responsible for the sugar highs. Simple carbohydrates should be enjoyed in moderation.
