Constipation is common condition which entails infrequent or uncomfortable bowel movement. It can produce various associated discomforts including obstipation, faecal impaction, bowel obstruction and rectal bleeding. In several cases, constipation may not be a cause for serious concern, especially if not caused by an infection or digestive disorder. It can then be relieved by modifications to one’s diet and lifestyle, without recourse to medication and treatment. Thus, here is a list of ways in which one can prevent and remedy constipation to achieve healthy bowel movement – if the problem persists for long however, consulting a physician for it is highly recommended.
1. Stay Hydrated
Hard stool is a common sign of constipation – so the more water you drink, the easier it will become to get rid of stool in the colon. A simple glass of water will literally wash down dry stool and relieve constipation symptoms. Men should drink around 10-12 glasses of water per day, while women should drink 8-9 glasses water each day. One should completely avoid caffeinated beverages such as sodas and colas, and even alcohol. These beverages are diuretics and they result in fluid loss by increasing the passage of urine. So, a person suffering from constipation should completely cut down the intake of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, instead they should drink water and herbal teas to improve the bowel movements.
