Having black stool doesn’t necessarily mean there is something medically wrong with you. It could be from your diet or certain medications you might have been prescribed. However, some medical conditions will cause the stool to turn dark or black. Pay attention to whether or not the color of your stool is consistently black or just appears darker on random occasions.

1. What Causes Black Stool?

The food you eat can play a big part in the color of your stool. Any type of food that has black dye in it will cause your stool to turn black. For instance, eating cupcakes with black frosting or Oreo cookies can temporarily cause your stool to appear black. Certain medications or over the counter drugs can also cause the black color, especially iron pills.
